As mothers and women, we spend so much of our daily bandwidth tending to everyone else that seeing our own positive qualities becomes surprisingly difficult. We tend to dismiss our patience, downplay the immense mental load we carry, and quietly overlook the resilience woven into our days.
The Johari Window is a reflective tool designed to deepen self-awareness by creating a safe space for someone who loves you to mirror your positive qualities back to you. When you are deep in the trenches of family life, receiving gentle, honest reflection from a partner, friend, sister, or fellow mum helps you recognise the warmth, intuition, and quiet strength you bring into the room, even on the days you feel you are barely keeping it together.
A Note on Adaptation, Nuance & Scope
This exercise is an educational adaptation of the classic Johari Window model developed by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham, specially re-framed around the emotional nuances and domestic realities of motherhood and womanhood.
- A Mirror, Not an Evaluation: This tool is designed purely for gentle personal reflection and connection. It is not a clinical assessment, personality diagnostic, or measure of relational health.
- Positive Framing & Safety: Traditional versions of the Johari Window sometimes include negative or critical traits, which can trigger defensiveness or emotional harm. This version intentionally focuses on positive capacities, quiet strengths, and honest reflections to ensure feedback remains constructive, uplifting, and emotionally safe.
- Context & Relational Safety: Feedback reflects a single person’s perspective in a specific snapshot of time. Only share your link with people you trust implicitly to hold your vulnerability with care, kindness, and respect.
- Personal Boundaries: You always retain full agency over what you choose to integrate. If an observation does not resonate with you, feel free to set it aside.
How It Works: Select 5 or 6 qualities below that feel true to you in this current season of your life, then generate your private share link. Send the link to someone who truly sees you, a partner, a close friend, or another mother. Once they pick the traits they see in you, your shared window will reveal your strengths in a whole new light.
Gentle Enquiries for Your Window
Motherhood and womanhood naturally change what parts of us are visible and what parts we hold close to our chests. Looking at your four panels, take a quiet moment with a warm drink and consider:
- The Shared Ground (Open Area): Which qualities do both of you easily celebrate? How do these natural gifts anchor your home and relationships?
- The Gentle Mirror (Blind Spot): Which positive qualities did your friend or partner highlight that surprised you? Where are you being harder on yourself than you need to be, and can you let yourself receive their words?
- The Inner Landscape (Hidden Area): What quiet emotions, personal boundaries, or sensitivities are you holding privately? Are they protecting your peace right now, or is there a safe connection where you could let a little more of your true self be seen?
- The Unfolding Self (Latent & Growing): What parts of your identity or personal joy feel dormant in this current season, waiting gently for the space to re-emerge as your family grows?
