As mothers and women, our minds are constantly holding everything at once: nap schedules, developmental milestones, emotional weather in the home, family meals, and the unending hum of the mental load. When overwhelm arrives, it is rarely because we aren’t doing enough; it is because we are pouring our finite energy into things that were never ours to control.
The Circle of Control is a grounding psychological exercise adapted for the realities of family life. It invites you to release the heavy weight of outside outcomes and gently call your energy back to the quiet, powerful choices sitting directly within your own hands.
A Note on Adaptation, Boundaries & Scope
This exercise is an educational adaptation inspired by the Circle of Control framework (originating in Stoic philosophy and cognitive-behavioural psychology), specially re-framed around the unique mental load, domestic realities, and nervous system demands of motherhood and family life.
- Releasing Perfectionism, Not Responsibilities: Surrendering what sits in your outer circle does not mean neglecting your family or becoming passive. It simply means recognising the boundary between what is genuinely yours to direct and what is an unpredictable life condition (such as toddler illness, developmental regressions, or outside opinions).
- The Motherhood Ambiguity: In family life, the lines of control are rarely clean. A child’s emotions or a partner’s mood deeply affect our daily environment, making them feel like our personal responsibility to manage. This tool serves as a gentle compass to help you unhook your emotional equilibrium from outcomes you cannot guarantee.
- Compassion Over Self-Blame: If categorising your daily worries highlights how much bandwidth you have spent on uncontrollable outcomes, avoid turning that into self-criticism. Over-functioning is often an instinct born out of deep devotion and love.
- Grounding & Support: If letting go of control triggers spikes in anxiety, hypervigilance, or panic, consider this an invitation to slow down and seek grounding support through a trusted perinatal counsellor or mental health professional.
My reactions, boundaries, words, self-compassion, and daily presence.

How to Use: Click on either circle container below (Within My Hands or Outside My Control) to set your active destination, then tap the everyday situations from the bank to sort them. You can also type custom worries or tasks directly into either space. When you are finished, use the print button to save your visual anchor.
Gentle Enquiries for Motherhood
Looking at the two spaces you have sorted, set down your phone, take a slow breath, and consider:
- The Emotional Leak: Which item in your “Outside My Control” circle has been taking up the largest share of your emotional bandwidth this week? What would happen if you gave yourself permission to surrender it?
- The Rooted Centre: What is one small, tender thing inside your “Within My Hands” circle, like stepping outside barefoot for two minutes, having a glass of water, or speaking gently to yourself after a hard moment, that could restore your calm right now?
- Holding Boundaries: Where can you shift from trying to control someone else’s reaction (a toddler’s big emotions, a partner’s mood, or family expectations) to protecting your own response and inner peace?
