Ditching the Pouches: Why Your Child Doesn’t Need Pre-Made Baby Food

A Hill I Will Happily Die On

Your baby, toddler, or child does not need commercial food pouches and jars as their main source of nutrition.

While convenience foods have their occasional place in a busy world, the multi-billion-pound pre-made baby food industry has convinced parents that feeding little ones requires specialized, shelf-stable purees. It simply does not.

If you prepare and cook real food at home, those exact same meals can easily be modified so your children can safely eat alongside you. Sharing the food you cook cuts out industrial fillers, introduces natural textures early, and removes the artificial divide between “baby food” and “family food”.

My Journey: From Ultra-Processed to Real Whole Foods

I share this perspective without an ounce of judgment, because I have lived the alternative. Prior to having my son, I ate poorly. My daily routine relied heavily on ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and I will openly admit that I never consistently ate fresh fruit or vegetables each day.

When it came time to wean my son, I faced a hard truth: nothing on my plate was nutritionally adequate or appropriate for a developing body. Weaning forced me to completely overhaul my own relationship with food.

Having my son is the single best thing that ever happened to me. He transformed my life in countless ways, not least of which was inspiring me to prioritize real nutrition, embrace cooking from scratch, and leave industrial foods behind.

Zero Guilt, Zero Shame

If you currently use pouches or have relied on jars in the past, please release any feelings of guilt or blame. Modern parenting is demanding, and commercial marketing is relentless.

This space is never about guilt. It is about equipping you with the clarity to decide how you want to nourish your household moving forward. Whether you are navigating weaning for the first time, feeding a toddler, or preparing for another pregnancy and wanting a fresh approach, you have complete permission to take small, manageable steps at your own pace.

The Science & Safety

  • The Evidence: To explore how industrial manufacturing alters natural nutrients and sugar concentration in commercial purees, read the BBC’s investigation into the baby food industry.
  • Weaning & Safe Introduction: If you are beginning to wean or introducing common allergens, consult your GP or health visitor, and review the official guidance at the NHS Safe Weaning and Food Allergies Hub.
  • Choking Prevention: Always prepare whole ingredients into shapes, textures, and consistencies suited to your child’s developmental stage (e.g., steaming firm vegetables until completely soft, and slicing round items lengthwise). Always supervise your child during mealtimes.
